In Ohio, a number of laws have been put in place to prevent illegal Internet gambling. These laws include the Wire Act and the Illegal Gambling Business Act. This law applies to Internet casinos and sportsbooks. Moreover, the Federal Communications Commission is authorized to suspend the operation or furnishing of facilities.
As a result of the federal government’s efforts, many states have adopted laws to limit or ban the operation of online gambling sites. Illinois is currently the only state that has legalized online poker. Indiana will soon offer the same, while Massachusetts will be the first to fully legalize sports betting. Ultimately, it is expected that about half of the U.S. will be able to wager on their favorite sporting events in the next few years.
Ohio has also approved a law to permit the placement of slot machine-like video lottery terminals at seven racetracks. Currently, the Ohio Gaming Commission is accepting applications from operators to run these kiosks. Some of these licenses will be distributed among professional sports outlets. Those interested in participating in the new online gambling industry in Ohio will want to apply for a license before the state’s universal start date in 2023.
